Research experience

In 2005, Mariëlle received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology at Radboud University Nijmegen (Ph.D. project: The social functions of mimicry). She worked as an assistant professor at the department of Social and Organizational Psychology at Leiden University and Utrecht University and is currently working at the department of Social Psychology at Tilburg University. 1.5 Years after obtaining her Ph.D., she started supervising Ph.D. projects. Currently, she is daily supervisor of Jessanne Mastop on the project ‘Nonverbal behavior and its consequences towards people with high and low status’ (promoter: Eric van Dijk) and of Anna van ‘t Veer on the project ‘When lying is the norm: how deception (detection) can be dependent on different contexts’ (promoter: Ilja van Beest). Mariëlle organized and coordinated various conferences, symposia, and colloquia. For instance, she is co-organizer of the upcoming Social Psychology conference in the Netherlands. Finally, she was asked to be editor of the Dutch Yearbook Social Psychology (ASPO), is an expert reviewer for several international grant organizations, and post-hoc reviewer for international journals. She also participated in various committees and boards.

Teaching experience

Mariëlle has coordinated, developed, and taught courses on social psychology (bachelor), academic skills (bachelor), group dynamics (bachelor and master), and emotions (bachelor and research master). Additionally, she supervises master and bachelor theses. Furthermore, Mariëlle created the Student Learning Program for the 3rd edition of the textbook ‘Social Psychology’ by Smith and Mackie (English and Dutch version). Her teaching evaluations are very good, which lead to a nomination by the social and organizational psychology department for the best teacher award of psychology in 2007. Moreover, she has received her Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO, proof of didactic competence for lecturers in academic education) in 2010.
